Mark Roy

Mark Roy founded Breakthrough Consulting Group LLC to help his clients achieve breakthroughs of their own: breakthrough moments that ignite breakthrough habits that help clients break through to the next level.

Mark is a certified executive coach and trusted thought partner to senior leaders, entrepreneurs and organizations, helping them achieve next-level leadership, performance and communications objectives. Executive coaching clients turn to Mark from several industries, including legal, finance, technology, healthcare, real estate, life sciences, hospitality and management consulting, among others. As a thought partner, clients appreciate Mark’s authenticity, EQ, instinct and experience.

During the early part of his career, Mark sharpened his marketing and communications skills in the publishing industry as an editor and as a literary agent working with emerging talent and bestselling authors. Later, he helped make history in the nonprofit sector leading the PR campaigns for several marriage equality lawsuits across the United States. Mark went on to serve on the senior leadership teams of the marketing and business development departments at five law firms, including two of the ten largest law firms in the world.

His in-house experience at some of the most elite law firms in the world prepared him for business-to-business communications in the information and technology industry. At Thomson Reuters, the world’s leading source of news and information for professional markets, Mark led the global communications team for the $3.5 billion Legal business unit and later served as Vice President, Business Communications Content for the entire $12 billion enterprise.

Before turning his focus to Breakthrough full time, Mark again put his skills to work in service of the nonprofit sector. This time, he led the communications team at The WNET Group, parent company of America’s flagship PBS station, among other regional and national stations, and beloved productions like Nature, Great Performances, and many more.

Mark's community service positions have included: founding board member of the Episcopal Response to AIDS, Co-Chair of the Parish Council of St. Bartholomew's Church in Manhattan, and the Vestry of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Jackson Heights, New York. He is a Fellow Member, Institute of Coaching, at McLean Hospital, Harvard Medical School affiliate; a member of the LQBTQIA+ Committee of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology; and a lay Associate of the Order of the Holy Cross, an Anglican Benedictine monastic community.

Mark graduated from the University of California, San Diego with a B.A. in Literature/Writing and, while leading the marketing communications team for the Americas at one of the largest law firms in the world, he earned his M.B.A. at Baruch College, City University of New York. Mark later received executive coaching training from Columbia University’s Columbia Coaching Certification Program, and he is certified by Rutgers University, in partnership with global executive search and consulting firm Heidrick & Struggles, as a Leadership Coach for Organizational Performance. Mark holds additional certifications from the International Coaching Federation (ACC) and Hogan Assessments (Hogan Personality Inventory; Hogan Development Survey; and Motives, Values, Preferences Inventory).

Outside of work and community activities, Mark enjoys spending time with his family exploring the beauty and culture in the vicinity of their country house in New York’s Hudson Valley. During the lockdown, Mark learned Tae Kwon Do with his daughter and quickly learned that he needed to incorporate a stretching routine into his daily activities to be flexible enough to keep up with her kicks! More recently, an adherent of life-long learning, Mark returned to graduate school part-time to work toward his Doctor of Psychology in Human and Organizational Psychology.
